Craig at Suomenlinna during root searching trip finding ancestors.
Craig remigrated to Finland in 2021, tracing his roots back to Multia. His grandmother and great-grandfather left Finland for Northern Minnesota still when Finland was the Grand Duchy of Finland under Russian control. His great-grandfather later returned and is buried in Ähtäri—and now Craig has returned, too. Fluent in Chinese, Craig is currently learning Finnish, with plans to study Swedish.

Nan Riikola Burton and her husband retired to southwestern Finland in 2022, a move inspired by her deep Finnish-American heritage. With ancestral roots tracing back to Lumijoki and Revonlahti, Nan views her retirement not merely as a relocation, but as a return to her spiritual home.
Currently deepening her connection to the culture through Finnish language studies, Nan is passionate about the remigrant experience. As Vice Chair, she is dedicated to advocating for a welcoming society where remigrants are embraced as full members, with clear, stable pathways to permanent residency and citizenship.
Karla and her two dogs exploring their new home.
Karla remigrated to Finland in May 2025, bringing along her two dogs and a deep connection to her Finnish roots. Her grandfather was born in Vaasa and immigrated to Chicago, IL as a teenager, where he later met Karla's Swedish grandmother. Inspired by her family's Nordic heritage, Karla is now studying Finnish and plans to learn Swedish as well. For her, moving to Finland represents both a personal journey of rediscovery and a homecoming to the culture and traditions that shaped her family.
